About Us
We are Quaker Valley High School students working to give back to our community
We are students at Quaker Valley High School, and this idea developed as a result of our talks about our school’s experiential learning requirement for graduation. We started talking about ways that we could meet this requirement that would include things we are passionate about while also giving back to the community. Our love for athletics is strong, but once we started talking, we realized how much time we spent as kids playing games like chess and how much it has helped us develop as athletes. We also both grew up walking into town, playing in Sewickley’s parks, and attending events at the Sewickley Library (like chess competitions and play days) so the logical next step for us was to try to connect everything. That is how the idea for Chess in Motion was born.
Mission Statement
We are two Sewickley teenagers who have grown up playing soccer together. Soccer is more than a sport, it’s a thinking game, and we feel that growing up playing chess helped us become better soccer players. Sewickley is a small community, and we appreciate the support we have received from it as we have grown up, and we would like to give back. Our goal is to put places for people of all ages to enjoy chess in public spaces.
The Soccer and Chess Connection
Soccer is like a chess game in motion, and we are grateful that we grew up in a community that encouraged and supported our many interests. As kids who grew up playing in local parks, walking to town, and visiting the library, we think it is important for us to give back to our community. One thing that we believe helped our ability to think on the soccer field is the game of chess. Chess and soccer are surprisingly similar in that both involve a lot of strategy, thought, and movement. If one attack isn’t working, you need to look for weaknesses, adjust, and switch methods. Both are thinking games, but chess is a game that can bring people together and be easily played in a public space. Having public chess in Sewickley would help build community because people would gather and meet to play the game. A positive game encourages thinking, community building, and sportsmanship. That is why we would like to make chess available for all to all in Sewickley to learn and enjoy playing.
Our Goal
Our goal is to make the game of chess more accessible to the Sewickley community. We feel that having a public chess set in one or more of Sewickley’s public parks would give Sewickley residents a place to connect in a way that promotes thoughtfulness and comradery.
